Current research interests are directed towards strengthening marine conservation initiatives by identifying possible bottlenecks to the social success of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Given the many failures of MPAs in meeting both biological and social goals, a governance approach to MPA implementation and management opens the door to a wider perspective of MPA processes, where potentially affected communities are engaged in decision-making. In particular, the coordination and management challenges imposed by MPA networks, especially transboundary and community-based, may benefit more clearly from such an approach. Future work will hopefully be inspired by the following research interests: social data requirements for MPA network design through MARXAN; adaptation strategies of MPAs to climate change; emerging practices in Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Ecosystem-Based Management.
