Activities
Since 2021, Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Zaki Ahmad has
been the Director of Asian Institute of International Affairs and Diplomacy
(AIIAD). He is also an Associate Professor at the School of International
Studies (SOIS), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) where he teaches International
Relations and International Maritime Politics and Issues.
Dr. Zaki obtained his PhD degree in 2011 from the Australian
National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of
Wollongong, Australia under the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE)
Scholarship Scheme. His PhD thesis presents an analysis of to what extent Malaysian
laws, policies, and measures are consistent with the international legal and
normative framework for responsible fisheries in the executive economic zone.
He is also involved, as a speaker capacity, in various
workshops and seminars on topics ranging from law of the sea, South China Sea
disputes, and responsible fisheries to contemporary issues and challenges of
international affairs. He has also been invited by various departments and faculties
to give a talk on academic writing and citation, especially on coherence
writing skills and APA reference format for both undergraduate and postgraduate
students.
Dr. Zaki’s current research interests focus on Illegal, Unreported
and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, the law of the sea, maritime policy, and regional
diplomacy practices in the context of African States. More recently, his research interests concentrate on
the study of Malaysia’s foreign policy posture in the South China Sea dispute,
and local community engagement in promoting and facilitating responsible fisheries,
with the focus on food security.
