Activities
After graduating in Fisheries Technology and Engineering at the Black Sea (Karadeniz) Technical University, Trabzon, Turkey, I completed my MSc. at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Middle East Technical University (METU-IMS) in Turkey. During my MSc
thesis, I studied microplastics present in the sea surface, water column, sediment and fish guts from the North-eastern Mediterranean. My primary research interests are impacts of anthropogenic pollution on marine organisms, and in my current research I use methods including marine microbiology and field observations. I am a recent graduate of Akdeniz University
where I researched molecular identification of some potential bacterial
pathogens and characterization of antibiotic resistance genes in biofilm formed
on plastic particles obtained from rivers and coastline.
Sea regions of study
Mediterranean Sea - Western Basin
Mediterranean Sea - Eastern Basin
Skills
Through multi-disciplinary lecture attendance and participation in numerous research cruises, I have gained a wealth of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills. Through the analysis of a vast quantity of data I am proficient in the use of the computer software programs Excel, SPSS, R Studio and ArcGIS. I have acquired widespread practical experience in a variety of methods for sampling planktonic organisms, fish, seawater and sediment, wastewater treatment plants for monitoring and time-series surveys, including marine litter surveys conducted offshore, inland (rural lakes and rivers) and on the beach. I am adeptly experienced in DNA isolation with phenol-chloroform extraction procedure and identification with PCR, and I have practiced on antibiotic resistance testing and using PCR primers targeting antibiotic resistance genes of isolated pathogenic bacteria.
