Patrice Brehmer is an oceanographer and researcher at IRD, specialising
in marine ecosystems and fisheries ecology. He began his research as a behavioural fisheries ecologist with a background in fisheries and fisheries acoustics. His research focuses on the effect of anthropogenic factors on behavioural response and adaptation of exploited aggregative pelagic fish in a wide range of ecosystems, through cooperation with marine and freshwater scientists worldwide, which allows him to gain experience and knowledge on pelagic fish school behaviour. Approach by direct in situ
observation and principally by underwater acoustics measurements. Today, he focuses on the dynamics
of fishery resources, the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems, marine
pollution and the optimisation of sustainable management methods for aquatic
resources. He is recognised for his direct approach to fisheries socio-ecosystems, particularly in West Africa, where he collaborates with numerous local and international players. His approach is resolutely interdisciplinary
and cross-sectoral. Currently leader of the G15 technical and financial
partners in Senegal's fisheries sector. Appointed by decree to the
scientific boards of the Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles, the
Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Océanographiques et des Pêches, and the Parc
National du Banc d'Arguin. He has coordinated several emblematic international research projects in
West Africa and supervised numerous students. Author of over 100 scientific
papers, Brehmer has hundreds of co-authors, mainly from Africa and representing
a wide range of research institutions in the South and North. He has served on more than 20 international
scientific committees of symposia and conferences, and organized numerous
workshops, including high-level ones.
