Activities
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute is the expert advisory body for the Swedish Government on meteorology, climatology, hydrology and oceanography under the auspices of the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise. SMHI manages and supplies information to provide knowledge and advanced decision-support information for public services, the private sector, and the general public. SMHI operations are funded by direct government grant, under contract to other government agencies, through research funding including EU-projects and on commercial terms through its business services.
SMHI is the leading producer of oceanographic data in Sweden, and one of the major producers in the Baltic region. Marine data production includes regional climate simulations (including biogeochemistry), operational warnings for sea level, waves and currents, oil spill tracking and support, sea ice monitoring and prediction, algal bloom tracking and warning using satellite remote sensing, ship-based eutrophication and biodiversity monitoring as well as managing the national observing networks for sea level, waves and hydrographic conditions using caissons and buoys. SMHI is the IODE National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC). SMHI created and maintains the national database SHARK (Swedish Ocean Archive) and through its involvement in EUMETSAT is a key stakeholder in remote sensing data & information management. In addition, SMHI hosts the National Climate Data Centre (ECDS). Through its involvement in the national geodata committee SMHI is coordinating the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive across Sweden. SMHI’s website, www.smhi.se, offers oceanographic data for free download since 2002 together with a variety of products for forecasting, real/near-real time and delayed mode applications. Through the E-HYPE initiative, SMHI has developed a high-resolution hydrological forecasting system for the whole of Europe, and released it with open source licensing to enable the widest possible community benefit. SMHI represents Sweden in WMO, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, IPCC, UNESCO-IOC, IOC-IODE, GOOS and ICES-WGDIG, and provides expert support to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management in the Marine Conventions (HELCOM and OSPAR). Further, SMHI is partner in SeaDataNet AISBL (Consortium) and the data & information management EU-projects EMODnet, JERICO, Blue-Cloud 2026 and Copernicus.
