Mar Libre is a citizen-led volunteer group founded in 2015, devoted to preserving and restoring marine ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs in Baja California Sur. Our mission is to raise awareness about the devastating effects of plastic pollution and inspire action. We organize monthly clean-up campaigns where volunteers remove large amounts of waste from these fragile habitats. Beyond clean-ups, we prioritize environmental education by delivering talks to students of all ages, highlighting the importance of protecting marine environments and reducing single-use plastic consumption. Together, we’re building a community committed to conserving our oceans and their vital ecosystems.
In Mar Libre, my role involves coordinating the monthly clean-ups, which include creating flyers to invite public participation, preparing all necessary materials for the event, and ensuring smooth execution on the day. I also manage our social media platforms, sharing engaging content to expand our reach and inspire action. On the environmental education side, I maintain communication with the teacher leading our program, ensuring she has the resources she needs. To support her salary, the founder and I organize musical fundraising events, combining creativity and purpose to sustain our mission.
