Activities

The Blue Design Alliance (BDA) is a consortium of higher education institutions whose mission is to contribute to the valorisation of water, ocean and river resources and social and environmental sustainability through design, focusing on the production of knowledge, research and skills training linked to the blue economy. BDA institutions provide training linked to Blue Design and the circular, inclusive and sustainable economy, with the aim of accelerating the requalification of the territory, making it more resilient through the creation of new blue jobs and professions.
The training and research programmes to be developed by the BDA are part of the ‘STEAM Youth Impulse’ and ‘Adult Impulse’ of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which aims to ‘boost the training of young people and adults over the next five years in the face of emerging challenges’. Within the scope of the STEAM Youth Impulse, a training offer has been designed that includes Higher Professional Technical Courses (CTePS), summer courses and actions to promote literacy and blue knowledge, aimed at students from secondary schools, art schools and vocational schools. The Adults programme offers an innovative range of postgraduate courses, short courses (micro-credentials) and a series of conferences and educational workshops - Water Design Views.

A benchmark in the teaching of design and the arts, ESAD is located in Matosinhos, on the north coast of Portugal. ESAD and its Research Unit (esad-idea) are mobilised as promoters of the Blue Design Alliance consortium. Its R&D unit, esad-idea, accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research and is already part of national and international networks. Studying at ESAD will allow you to broaden your creative, critical and technological skills in order to pursue a professional career as a senior technical specialist capable of intervening and applying design principles considering the diversity of space and objects and communication systems in the field of the Blue Economy, respecting circularity, inclusivity and the sustainability of resources.
