Activities

The Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (IGER) and the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) share common interests in environmental and natural resource management, particularly in understanding geophysical processes, coastal systems, and sustainable resource use. Here’s a brief outline of the related activities:
1. Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
   - IGER: Conducts research on geological and earth resources, focusing on soil, groundwater contamination, and land use impacts.
   - NIOMR: Focuses on marine environmental monitoring, assessing water quality, and the health of marine ecosystems.

2. Resource Exploration and Management
   - IGER: Works on the exploration of mineral resources, assessing soil quality, and geotechnical studies for land management.
   - NIOMR: Involved in marine resource exploration, particularly fisheries and aquaculture, and the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

3. Coastal and Marine Geosciences
   - IGER: Engages in research on coastal erosion, sediment dynamics, and the geological impacts on coastal communities.
   - NIOMR: Focuses on coastal and marine habitat conservation, investigating the effects of coastal erosion, sea level rise, and pollution on marine environments.

4. Pollution and Contamination Studies
   - IGER: Investigates land-based pollution sources, particularly industrial and agricultural contaminants affecting soil and groundwater.
   - NIOMR: Studies marine and water-based pollution, including oil spills, heavy metal contamination, and impacts of human activity on marine life.
 5. Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability
   - IGER: Researches the impacts of climate change on land resources, soil degradation, and desertification.
   - NIOMR: Investigates climate change effects on marine ecosystems, including ocean acidification, temperature rise, and the displacement of marine species.

These two institutions complement each other by addressing both terrestrial and marine environments, with a focus on sustainable resource management, environmental conservation, and pollution mitigation; and of which I engaged in the above mention activities.
