Milton Kampel is a PhD oceanographer working at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), a civil organisation linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. He is head of the Laboratory for Ocean Monitoring by Satellites (MOceanS), Professor and Member of the Board of INPE's postgraduate programme in Remote Sensing, with CAPES concept 7, and academic supervisor of postdoctoral fellows and doctoral, master's and undergraduate students. He has been Head of Division and Deputy Director of Earth Observation at INPE. He also coordinates and participates in research, development and innovation projects funded by national and international agencies, involving researchers, technologists, professionals and students from Brazil and abroad. He is the author and co-author of scientific publications in indexed journals, books, book chapters, conference proceedings and national and international symposia. He has taken part in various technical and scientific events and meetings, human resources training courses and fieldwork, with more than 1,000 (one thousand) days at sea. He has
interest in the following lines of research: remote sensing of oceanic,
coastal, and inland aquatic systems; monitoring of marine ecosystems; land-ocean interactions; air-sea interactions; coral reefs; and mangroves.
Skills
He has skills in processing and analysing satellite data and images in different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, including the visible, infrared and microwave bands, using active and passive sensors to develop applications in oceanography and coastal zones. He supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students in oceanography and marine sciences, coordinates and participates in national and international research, development and innovation projects, collaborates with institutions in Brazil and abroad dedicated to the oceans, and is a reviewer for indexed journals and research funding agencies in Brazil and abroad. He takes part in oceanographic cruises dedicated to collecting in situ data, as well as processing the data in the laboratory and then analysing and interpreting it. He writes and collaborates on articles submitted for publication in indexed journals. Participates in capacity building efforts, and in other outreach activities.
