At The Ocean Race, we’re not just racing across the ocean, we’re racing for the ocean. Through our Racing with Purpose sustainability programme, which we created in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing, we are using our global platform to inspire action to protect the seas.
As we race around the world, teams gather valuable data about the state of the ocean, including information on water temperature, oxygen levels and microplastic pollution. In the last edition of the Race more than 4 million pieces of environmental data were collected and shared with leading science organisations before feeding into crucial reports about the ocean and climate that inform environmental policy.
We are also striving to influence policy through our work to gain support for a Universal Declaration of Ocean Rights. This ambitious initiative aims to secure a global approach to protecting our blue planet, which has the ocean’s right to thrive at its heart. Our series of Summits, which featured prominent speakers such as UN Secretary-General António Guterres, are a forum for gathering support and exploring ocean rights. In September 2023 during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, we held a special event to present principles for a potential Declaration.
Inspiring the next generation to protect the ocean is also important to us. Our dedicated Learning programmes, for 6-16 year olds, help children discover why the ocean is critical to all life on the planet and what we can do to look after it. Over 220,000 learners in 73 countries have used the free materials, which are available in eight languages.
Protecting the ocean can only be achieved through teamwork, which is why the Race is committed to working with sailing teams, partners, host cities and other stakeholders to hold a sustainable event and inspire change.
