Activities
2018 to date: Project Manager at
Oceano Azul Foundation.
Responsible for Ocean Literacy Projects, namely the
Flagship Pilot-Project “Educating a Blue Generation”, that promotes ocean
literacy of children between 6-10 years old, through the capacitation of
primary school teachers. Since 2018, more than 900 teachers targeting more than
15000 students, have received specific training and materials that facilitate
the integration of ocean topics into the first cycle curricular disciplines,
and are implementing the program in their schools. The program is being implemented in 6 municipalities of main Portugal and in 4 islands of the Azores region. An impact assessment longitudinal evaluation is being conducted.
Responsible for coordinating the donation of nautical equipment (sailing boats and boards) to the portuguese network of school sports of the education ministry, to promote nautical sports, the emotional connection to the ocean and ocean literacy.
She has been involved in several international initiatives to promote Ocean Liiteracy,
- Part of the Multistakeholder Platform of the Workpackage6- Ocean
Literacy and Awareness of the AANchor- All Atlantic Cooperation for Ocean
Research and Innovation Coordination and Support Action.
- Contribution to the Handbook for Teachers of the EU Blue Schools Network, EU4Ocean Coallition (in prep)
- Participation in the workshop "Ocean literacy for the United Nations Decade of ocean science for sustainable development" organized by IOC-UNESCO, 12-13 December, Venice
- Participation in the I Ocean Literacy Summit, 8th june 2020;
- Participation in the EU4Ocean Webinars, 24-25 september 2020
2012-2018: Executive Director of Tavira Ciência Viva Science Centre (Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira), a Science Centre focused on Science
communication to the general public and in particular to schools, included ocean literacy hands on activities and field trips to the Ria Formosa Nature park, and beach clean up actions.
Teaching experience:
2012- 2018. “Marine
Ecology” Msc in Marine Biology and Conservation, “Marine
Biology” and “Field course in Marine Biology” to students of the Biology
course, Instituto Superior de Psicologia
Aplicada-University Institute, Lisbon.
1993-2004 :
“Ecology”, “Environmental Education”, “Environmental Sciences” and “Biology” as
“Professora Adjunta” at Instituto Superior de Ciências Educativas (I.S.C.E.),
teaching future primary teachers and educators.
Research Activity:
2007- 2014: While member of the team MAREE– Marine
Ecology and Evolution, at CCMAR, R. Borges coordinated a team investigating
larval fish biodiversity and recruitment patterns of coastal fishes at the
Arrábida Marine Park. Her research focused on investigating connectivity
patterns between marine populations and the relevance of larval dispersal and
retention to the management of Marine Protected Areas.
1993- 2006: Member of the Eco-Ethology Research Unit
(Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon), R. Borges developed the
first study on the composition of larval fish assemblages at the Arrábida
Marine Park. The results obtained allowed the recognition of Arrábida as an
important hatching and nursery area, contributing to the definition of priority
areas for conservation in the Marine Park.
