Partnerships should not only be looked for in government organizations or NGOs but also for example in hotel and tourist organizations. The operational issues and a national plan should be in place in order to be communicated in the right way. Public awareness and Public warning are two different issues. Target groups should also include (next to the public), executives of large industries (refineries, harbor bound companies). The main goal is to give people ownership of their own safety by giving them knowledge. The authorities should give out a warning to those vulnerable groups in the community if there is time. After that the authorities come in for sheltering etc. Focus on material that does not exist yet. Do not make more books, booklets, flyers etc. but look for more creative (and even shocking) ways to touch the different focus groups. Work on community-based information and provide necessary tools based on the target groups needs and motivations. We should be able to provide fast, accurate scientific information about seismic events in order to be credible. We should make alliances in order to get information from those countries and islands in the region that do have all the expertise and ways to get out accurate information fast. Our scientist should be upgraded. We should get more scientific understanding of the likely impacts of tsunamis in our region. We should be honest to media and the public that information has its limits. We should keep in touch with the population on a regular basis to give understandable information on a continuous basis.
