Training is complemented and supported by the OceanTeacher training system. The OceanTeacher Academy (OTA), which offers a teaching programme of courses related to oceanographic data and information management and the development of related products and services, commenced its first academic year in 2009-2010. Appendices: OceanTeacher Academy courses 2010-2011 DRAFT TEXT FOR INCLUSION IN THE SUMMARY REPORT OceanTeacher forms the foundation of the IODE marine data and information management training program. The intercessional period has seen extensive progress in the development of OceanTeacher. OceanTeacher Digital Library. The OceanTeacher digital library has been substantially reviewed and converted to the wiki engine software Media Wiki, which is the same software program that runs Wikipedia. The two major divisions for the content of the OceanTeacher digital library are Marine Data Management and Marine Information Management. The review of the content has resulted in the addition of new materials requested by newer course offerings and the removal of materials that have not been useful for training. The review has also resulted in the elimination of many externally-sourced documents, in favour of external web links to the original sources. There are currently over 600 content pages in the Digital Library. OceanTeacher Classroom. The OT Classroom uses Moodle, an Open Source Learning Management System (LMS) that is widely used by educators as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for students. The Classroom component contains courses on oceanographic data and information management. These courses consist of a collection of outlines, notes, presentations and links to miscellaneous documents in the OT Digital Library. Some of the courses were substantially revised in 2010 and new courses added to the OceanTeacher Academy. The OceanTeacher Academy (OTA) commenced its first academic year in 2010. The objective of the OTA is to offer a teaching programme of courses related to oceanographic data and information management and the development of related products and services. The OTA also promotes the development of regional training nodes which will contribute to the long-term sustained provision of capacity building activities for IODE and other IOC programmes. The OTA target audience includes Marine Data Managers, Marine Information Managers and Marine Scientists who wish to increase their knowledge about marine data and information management. Marine Data Management involves all oceanographic and coastal data and the subsequent management of it, and is typically aimed at physical, chemical and biological data and data products (basic data sets, coastal atlases and maps). Marine Information Management covers the tasks of marine libraries, and the professional management of books, journals, articles. In 2010, nine OTA courses were successfully completed and seven courses are planned for 2011 (see Annex A). The types of courses offered by OTA are: Basic Courses fundamental principles in data or information management. Advanced Courses -- complex topics beyond the basic concepts. Applied Courses specialized treatment of specific data types or data for specific applications. Accredited (University) Courses developed specifically to meet formal university course requirements of coordinating institutions. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Courses designed to provide professional information and data managers with updated information, new information, or re-fresher information on selected topics of interest. Ocean Teacher is maintained by a small core of data and information management specialists. To ensure its continued success, Member States are urged to contribute to OceanTeacher, through the provision of content to the Digital Library, the provision of training material and course development for the Classroom, or participating as instructors at OTA courses. 1. REPORT ON ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE INTER_SESSIONAL PERIOD for Data Management Data Management Courses for the inter_sessional period are listed in the ANNEX A. The following are the additional training courses for DM: - WESTPAC Training Course for IODE Ocean Data Portal data providers, 31 August - 04 September 2009, Seoul, Rep. of Korea - MetOcean Modeling Jamboree-III, 19 - 23 October 2009, Oostende, Belgium - EUMETSAT/NOAA/IODE Training Course on the Use of Satellite Wind and Wave Products for Marine Forecasting, 14 - 18 December 2009, Oostende, Belgium - Training Course on the Establishment of National OceanDataPortal nodes in the Black Sea region (ODINBlackSea) for Georgian and Turkish NODCs, 21 - 23 December 2009, Turkey - First ODINAFRICA-IV training course on Coastal and Marine Atlas development, 26 July - 6 August 2010, Mombasa, Kenya REPORT ON ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE INTER-SESSIONAL PERIOD for Marine Information Management The role of the marine information management is evolving, and open access to information in all formats, including accompanying data must continue to play a central role in providing open and free access to information and scientific ideas. Also, we are cognisant of the role data plays in our information centers and have been and will be covering topics such as Why data matters to research librarians and The role of the librarian in support of research data activities. With this in mind the Marine Information Management, MIM OceanTeacher training activities for 2009-2010 concentrated on improving access to materials through methodologies for digitization of various types of assets, long term preservation and archiving philosophies and practices. Discussions on standards for metadata in all formats , environmental scans of existing digital assets, the setting of priorities for digital projects and the preservation and recovery of materials through natural and man- made disasters were taught through a variety of lectures and practical experience. During our digital asset courses surveys of the ODIN members existing collections were conducted to gather statistics on marine information materials which might be digitized. Also, grant writing for digital projects was covered in a short pre-conference course. It is planned to cover this topic in depth during a course in 2011. Another topic in 2011 will be Data Curation for Information Professionals and Practical Digitization. Several new qualified Instructors were recruited from academia, government, and the FAO and Belgium professional schools. 5/2009-9/2009 OT MIM Training course on website development, June 15-26, 2009 MIM and DM Digital asset management, October 2 7, 2009 MIM Training 2010 The role of National Coordinators for Information at ODINECT workshop, March 18-20, 2010 Preservation and archiving of digital resources March 22-26, 2010 Literature and databases of the marine sciences April 26-30, 2010 Disaster preparedness and recovery May 31-June 4, 2010 Writing for professional publication November 2010 Grants for digital projects October 2010 OceanDocs update for Latin America October 2010 ODINAFRICA Dakar Workshop ILMS systems November 2010 2.
