The Establishment of JCOMM and the Consequences for IODE

Summary The WMO Executive Council, at its Forty-eighth Session (Geneva, June 1996), strongly endorsed the developing and strengthening co-operation between WMO and IOC in a number of areas, and specifically "… agreed that further study on a closer co-operation between WMO and IOC in the CMM [the then WMO's Commission for Marine Meteorology] programme, including the possible co-sponsorship of the Commission by IOC, would be necessary …". The EC suggested that "… the study should prepare detailed documentation covering regulatory and financial aspects of enhanced collaboration, as well as an assessment of advantages and disadvantages to both WMO and IOC. The documentation should then be submitted to the Twelfth Session of CMM …"
